Welcome to Conroe, Texas! We are a city in Montgomery County, in the Houston-Baytown metro area. It is the county seat. The community was named for Isaac Conroe, lumberman.

Here are a few facts about Conroe. Conroe, Texas is at the edge of Sam Houston National Forest. A local resident, Dr. Charles B. Stewart, designed the lone star flag. Local landmarks include the Joe Roughneck statue in front of City Hall, commemorating George William Strake, who brought in the Conroe oil field in 1931. Our local festivals are the Cajun Catfish Festival - Oct. 12-14, 2007 and Juneteenth Jazz Fest - June 16, 2007


We have Lake Conroe, Sam Houston National Forest, Lone Star Hiking Trail, Heritage Museum of Montgomery County, and Texas 105 west to Montgomery 15, one of the most scenic roads, you’ll ever want to travel.

Conroe, Texas is a historical town, with business development started to develop in the 1890’s. In the 1900’s, lumber, timber and later gas and oil helped increased the population. In 1901, Conroe survived a devastating fire and was named "The Miracle City". Conroe Incorporated in 1904 as a city and was named after Issac Conroe. There was a second downtown fire in 1911 and in 1920, the first City Hall was built.
In 1924, the City of Conroe, Texas orders election for authorization to issue bonds for $49,000 to construct sanitary services and a sewage disposal plant. In 1930, Conroe opened it’s first red light in Downtown. In the 1930's, our current courthouse was constructed, Capitol Drug Store opened in the 1930’s, Crighton Theatre was built in the 1930's for live entertainment and in 1950, Elvis Presley performs there. In 2006, Conroe, Texas had a population of approximately 45,000

Current Happenings in Conroe, Texas

In 1999, the Downtown Revitalization program started with meetings relative to new building facades, financed streetscape improvements from the community to improve the public buildings. To develop and implement their strategy, the City Council took advantage of America's Downtown-New Thinking, New Life. A technical assistance program offered by the National League of Cities and Hyatt Palma, Inc. Mayor Carter Moore added that the City and the Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce began a partnership by focusing on the downtown's economic needs. Conroe became a 2006 Main Street City as through the Texas Historical Commission.
To enhance the economic strength, vitality and the employment stability of the downtown redevelopment area, There was a need support and retention of existing businesses and attracting of new ones. Especially for the businesses in the retail and professional services sectors. The redevelopment and promotion of the arts, entertainment, and cultural activities were essential in creating a dynamic downtown and bringing new capital and employment opportunities into the area.
The revitalization is moving ahead by an array of investments, improvements and actions occurring downtown.
In 2006, the city retained Destination Development consulting to give recommendations regarding Downtown Economic Development and implementation of the plan. Conroe became a 2006 Main Street City as through the Texas Historical Commission.
Conroe was designated as an official Texas Main Street City and began the program in January of 2006. This statewide program is a division of the Texas Historical Commission that promotes downtown revitalization within the context of historic preservation. The initial program is three year program to provide a staff person to facilitate the program and serve as a contact relative to restoration, economic development, board training, strategic planning, interior design, marketing and organizational assistance and other areas where the local community may not have local expertise.



Four Point Approach Conroe, Texas is moving towards the future through Organization, Promotion, Design & Economic Restructuring Organization means working towards the same goal. It is a common-sense formula of volunteer-driven and an organizational structure of board committees can ease the tough work of building consensus and cooperation among the groups.

Promotion means selling the positive image of Downtown to all through marketing of events, shoppers investors and using a retail promotional activity and marketing campaign.

Design means getting downtown in top shape capitalizing on its best assets - such as historic buildings and traditional downtown layout through and inviting atmosphere.

Economic Restructuring means finding a new purse for Conroe based enterprises. Helping existing businesses and building economic development downtown by recruiting new businesses downtown.

The Main Street Program and it's committees seeks to make downtown a better place to shop, work and live making it a place in which to be proud

We have some special events that you and your family will certainly enjoy, performed by local talented residents, as well as big names from outside of Conroe. Every first Thursday we have free concerts, these are wonderful for all ages! The Crighton Players, MONTGOMERY COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS SOCIETY, Roy Clark – Famed singer songwriter at his best, MONTGOMERY COUNTY CHORAL SOCIETY, First United Methodist, CONROE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, Montgomery County Performing Arts, MONTGOMERY COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS SOCIETY, Golden Dragon Chinese Acrobats, CONROE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, Entergy Young Texas Artists Concert of Finalists, to name a few.
